No mention of The Port, but still plenty of depressing news from the folks at Womens Wear Daily. Was it really just this year when folks were worried about our downtown becoming dominated by chain stores?

The city should have done whatever it took to keep the "original" Filene's Basement operating near that hole in the ground. Without it, there is no reason to go to Downtown Crossing. Whatever is there can be found someplace else at equal or better convenience.
Yes, it was just this year that there were worries about our downtown being overtaken by chain stores. What we should be worried about this year is the continuation of the current economic recession/near depression.
Lack of foot traffic and people's reluctance or inability to spend is the real threat to our downtown.
