It never occurred to me that folks didn't know what happened back in 1999, but the city has changed so much that so many folks don't know that High Street was almost destroyed. It upsets me to this day that it almost happened!
But Ari, MassHighway had no plans to place the statue of George Washington anywhere. It wasn't even on their radar! And btw, I like your new post on the LHD a lot!

You told me the story once before, and I remember the trees coming down and the retaining wall along High Street near the ridge.
But George Washington!!?
Thanks for beating that back Mary.
Some suggest George be moved to the bullnose or thereabouts, areas that receive more foot traffic (from tourists) than Bartlet Mall.
I grasp the significance of Bartlet Mall and George, but I also grasp moving his one-of-two-in-the-world statue closer downtown.
Just sayin'.
Isn't that where the Byron Matthews statue is going?
Just kidding
