Poll Update

The most telling part of the poll results is 95% of the people responding think some kind of change is in order. That's encouraging as my biggest fear is the question doesn't pass. If it passes and I'm not on the commission, that's fine. But I just hope the measure passes.

The Newburyport charter could require a Mayor's Question Time, when people could ask the mayor rude questions, boo, shout and wave their arms -- just like the British Parliament.

You could even have the high school Homecoming Queen preside over the opening of the Council and read a speech while wearing a crown and robes.

Then Newburyport could secede from the United States, declare itself a Crown Dependency and invite a regiment of royal dragoons to quarter in Plum Island Coffee Roasters.

That would be cool.

That's one way to read the poll. Another way to read it is to say a majority do not want a city manager.

Well that's true, but even I'm not bold enough to suggest the 46 people voting in this poll is an accurate representation of the registered voters in the city. So I'm trying not to draw too fine a conclusion from this.

Fortunately, if the measure passes everyone will get a chance to vote in the only poll that really counts in Nov. 2011.
