You're right. George should have used the opportunity to teach his sick child that everything in this world grows old, gets broken and ultimately dies.
It's that ridiculous idealism that got him in trouble in the first place. I would have suspected Potter of stealing the $8,000 from the start - and I would have posted my suspicions on my blog or whatever went for a blog in those days. I notice there were no repercussions for his (Potter's) malfeasance. And while I'm on a rant, what's the deal with Mary becoming an unattractive "old maid?" Old maids don't have to be plain ... without George, she's plain? Honestly! Every year when I watch, I get incensed.
