A quick hop from Boston is the amazing little coast town of Newburyport, where you can stay the night @ blue. If you're not up for a plane to the Vineyard or ferry to Nantucket, this might just do.

Nantucket North?
I sometimes get a chuckle from reading a visitor's description of Newburyport. This one from a personal blog will give many the creeps. (And yes, we know Blue isn't in Newburyport.)

Yes, the confusion is understandable.
I wanted to draw attention to her suggestion that Newburyport was a substitute for Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard.
Two things:
- blue is really nice. It's a shame that it's right on the ocean on Plum Island.
- Newburyport MAY be Nantucket North, or Portsmouth South, or it might be a little city on the river that draws some tourists. We've never really figured out what we want to be when we grow up.
- The Carrot
Hey, it's BLU (no "e"). Trendy, huh?
I believe it has an 'e' on the end, but uses a lowercase 'b' for trendiness. At any rate, I think it's fair to characterize Newburyport as an easily accessed "alternative" to Nantucket or the Vineyard. In other words, if you want to avoid the travel issues and/or save some $$$, Newburyport is a nice little seaside escape.
