No Candidates in Sight

The Daily News is running a glum article on the lack of political opponents in the upcoming election.

Most shocking is the failure for school committee to draw enough candidates to fill its open seats. The Daily News  web site is lousy with anonymous commenters (not bloggers) who seem to know how exactly to manage the school budgets. It's shocking...just shocking...that none will run.

Speaking as someone who mulled a political run this year and opted out, I'll admit the commitment is daunting. So I give credit to those who put their names out there. They're not perfect, but at least they're showing up.

Two Votes Decided

Know this now, Barry Connell and Ed Cameron will be getting votes from me in November.

I'm a fan of both anyway, but I'm extremely pleased with the way both have addressed the issue of placing police cameras downtown.

First, Barry Connell.  He's been the only person to consistently question the need for the three and soon to be four  police cameras downtown, and I appreciate his willingness to speak. I've had concerns myself. I've wondered if the cameras were necessary, and what sort of precedent we're setting with their presence.

Conversations with friends led me to put away - but not throw away - my concerns. I concede cameras provide efficient coverage of our downtown, but I want assurances that the cameras stay there.

And that's where friend, neighbor and right-now Ward 4 Councilor Ed Cameron comes in.

Cameron, in my opinion, has devised a reasonable plan.

In the age of technology, when cameras are becoming more commonplace for such purposes, Councilor Ed Cameron is seeking to ink a new law into the city's ordinances that will require no more be erected for surveillance of the public without getting a review and permission of the mayor and City Council.
"All I want is for there to be some type of public input every time there's going to be a permanent camera installed for surveillance purposes," Cameron said.

Is this a perfect plan? Probably not. People who still have valid concerns about police surveillance won't be happy. But this would at least foster discussion over the inevitable plans to add more cameras in the future as improving technologies and declining prices make them even more attractive to police.

Still Don't Get It

I enjoyed an afternoon at Moseley Pines. Once again, I must ask, how any reasonable person can compare our fair city to 19th Century New York or Chicago.

We're blessed with an abundance of natural places.

So What the Hell is (NOT) Going on Here

As you can tell, I've taken a bit of time way from the ole lap top this past month. Fairly refreshing actually.

But I've got plans ... BIG plans ... for this blog.

Okay, not that big, but I'm going to work to keep this page a bit fresh and I hope to be introducing some more elements to make this a more informative experience.

The Twitter Feed is a start. Nothing too insightful but it'll help keep this page a bit fresh.

I hope you like.

The Masked Preservationist and I finally found some common ground.

And it's a miserable freaking place.

I'm referring, of course, to the Daily News report that the hotel plans are on a fast track to nowhere. At least that's the account that Tony Green shared with the NRA on Wed.

I couldn't attend, unfortunately, our baby sitter bagged at the last minute.

Sounds like I didn't miss much.
